In 1821 appeared in government "Pensions, Allowances, and Compensations" list. This was effectively a Profit and Loss account for Great Britain.
The entry reads:
Henry Stokes. Boatman. 10 years service. £20 annual allowance.
Interestingly his father in law William Stanley appears about him with an allowance of £20 annually for 12 years service.

Def: H Stokes of Poole, Fisherman
Witness: James Bristowe, Gentleman, Water Bailiff of Poole
Conviction: That on the 27th October 1834 defendant dredged in Poole waters and took 500 Oysters contrary to prohibition of the Mayor and to the Bye-laws.
Fine: 40 Shillings

1875 - Buried in St. Michaels, Hamworthy with wife. Stories passed down to Eilleen McMullen were:
1. When his wife died "he had another woman on his knee"
2. That a "boom swung round hit him on the head and killed him".
3. That he was a very bad man which is why they gave him a grave so that he couldn't get out (look at the grave :) )!!!

Was killed in the Solent whilst captain of a ship. The ship (Mistletoe) was struck by Queen Victoria's vessel (Alberta) with her onboard.
The vessel struck the mistletoe and "reversed" out. As it did this the Mistletoe sank. Rigging fell on Thomas and killed him.
There was a national enquiry and the family were paid off.

Found facing down dead in the snow

Buried on Brownsea Island. The RNLI stood over his grave and fired flares to mark his passing.
"Richard Sutton Stokes died in 1886 and is buried in the churchyard of St. Mary's, on Browsea Island. He was the first coxswain of the lifeboat "Manley Wood" and is credited with saving 72 lives."
